The end of the summer holidays has come – sadly for all of us as the days get shorter and cooler, but also a relief for all working mums who were counting the days until the children go back to school. This is also the time when lots of you are gearing up for what are often very busy months from September till the end of the year.

At Mums Like You we have been very busy launching new areas of the website with opportunities for mums in business to network, showcase their companies and learn from each other.

Last month we started our Business Clinic on the Forum where experienced entrepreneurs answer your questions about starting and running a successful business. Check it out on: Business Clinic
If you would like to contribute articles to this area or be a host of our Business Clinic please drop me an email on admin@mumslikeyou.com, it’s an excellent way to get visibility on Mums Like You and is FREE.

Another piece of news we are very excited about is the Business Mums Conference Awards, organised by one of our long-term members and PR expert Antonia Chitty. Entering the awards will help you gain a lot of media coverage, network with other business mums and get recognized for your efforts. Send in your entries by 17th September.

We are really excited to see that a lot of you have subscribed and listed on our Marketplace – the online business directory seen by over 10,000 influential mums every month. It costs £19.99 a month and here is how you can make your listings work even better:

  • Update your listing with pictures of your products and a weblink so that customers can get straight to your website if they see something they like
  • As your subscription is unlimited, post new listings for products, sales or discount offers– that way your listing will appear at the front page of the Marketplace

Choosing a business bank account can be a difficult process. For this reason, many people simply set up a business account with the same bank that they do their personal banking with. While this approach undoubtedly has its advantages in terms of convenience and familiarity, you may find that you can get a much better deal with another bank. Things to bear in mind when choosing a business bank account include the borrowing and transaction costs, the type of relationship offered by the bank, and the facilities that they offer.

If you are a sole trader, you can simply use your personal bank account, but it will look more professional, and make your business finances easier to manage, if you set up a separate business account. If you are setting up any other kind of company, such as a partnership or a limited company, then you will have to set up a separate account.

It can certainly pay to shop around when searching for a business account, as different banks will offer different inducements to bank with them, such as free banking for the first couple of years, data backup facilities, business seminars, credit control services, and vouchers for web advertising.

As a general rule, it is a good idea to go with a bank that you have heard of, and that has a good reputation. Another good option is to go with an internet only bank that is owned by one of the big high street banks. Some of the lesser-known banks may offer better terms, but they are also much more likely to disappear off the face of the earth, leaving you in a very difficult situation indeed.

When choosing a business account, you should compare the transaction fees charged by each account. While the difference between them may not seem like much, they can certainly add up over the course of thousands of transactions. You should also look out for accounts that offer high credit interest rates and low borrowing rates. Also, try to get an account that offers online banking, as this can be an invaluable time saver. For more information about business accounts and current accounts, visit the Santander website.

If you have got your diaries handy, mark the 18th of September 2010 - it's the date of the annual Mumpreneur Conference - a fantastic event celebrating mums' achievements in business. Mums Like You will be supporting the conference via regular blogs and updates and together with Ella Announcements will offer a free advertising package worth GBP  300 to each winner.

The Mumpreneur Conference 2010 is organised as a way for mums to get together and celebrate one another's achievements, no matter how big or small, as well as providing opportunities for these women to move forward in growing their business in a way that will fit around their family commitments.

I first heard about the conference from Amanda Farren - one of the organisers, a busy mum of 3 and a successful mumpreneur. I love the idea and think it's a fantastic opportunity for business mums to raise their profile, network and learn from each other.

It doesn't matter how small or established your business is, the nominations are open to all entrepreneurial mums in the following 8 categories: Best Start Up, Best Online Business, Best Business Support, Best Green Business, The Best Green business Award, Best Saleswoman,Best Interactive Business,Most Unique Product and The Inspirational Business Mum

The nomination process is already underway and runs until 2nd August 2010.
Although you might think there is plenty of time, by entering now you'll get an award badge and can tell all your clients you've been nominated for a national award. It will also be a good reason to issue a press release and contact your local press about it. So it's worth entering now by completing this nomination form.

Over the next months I'll be blogging about the conference and will also be updating the board of the Mumpreneur Group, so keep an eye for the latest.

Best of luck to all entrants!
