Everything that is real was imagined first

"Everything that is real, was imagined first". I have borrowed this quote from a great and inspirational friend and I know she won't mind. As long as I give it back. The above quote sums up my journey into making my new business a reality.  Ever since I can remember, two things I wanted to do were own business and to write a book.  I have always been creative and spent much of my working life as a Desktop Publisher, working in London.  I came to live in the North East about 5 years ago and there was not much opportunity to do anything creative.  So I happily installed myself in a job working for Northumbria Police (and I still love the job!).  However, I first thought actively about starting...

Hi there, My name is Laura Barton and I’m a features writer. I work for company called Medavia Ltd - the most successful features agency in the UK. We source, write and then sell real life feature articles to a huge range of women’s magazines including Grazia, Look, Marie Claire, Reveal, Cosmopolitan, More, etc, as well as all the national newspapers. At the moment I’m looking for your baby and pregnancy stories!!   Did you have a miracle baby? Were your chances of conceiving one in a million? Or did your baby survive against the odds? Did you use IVF for years to get your dream baby or to become a single mom? Did somehow getting pregnant save your life – alerting you to a dormant condition or even a tumour? Did...

what to do when you have no You time

As a career mother I struggle with finding the time for me, before I had my children I was still working full time but I still managed to squeeze in a coffee and my favourite past time shopping. Since having my first child 5 years ago I needed to come to terms with the fact that my new free time was when my children were asleep in the evening, meaning I had to trust the internet with online shopping. I had never experienced online shopping before and had heard stories, so I was pretty dubious. I spoke to a few friends and they had explained to me the different ways you can trust online shops when paying for goods as they often buy things online. With this new advice I decided to buy my first item online, I chose not to spend...

Direct Sales - Me?!

I gave up my management career in September 2008 when my son was born.    As a full time Mum I’ve loved being there for all the major events in my little boy’s life.   However, around his second birthday I found myself yearning for something else to occupy my mind.   Then I came up against the problem that faces so many Mums who want to work - finding paid work with the flexibility to spend the time you want with your children.   My previous role involved too much travel and nights away, and the economic climate had led to a massive reduction in the number of part time jobs in my area.   Strangely, it was an Advent Calendar that presented me with the solution to my dilemma. In November 2...

Hi, I've always enjoyed dressing my children in cool, Asian-themed clothes, but sometimes I find it difficult to find the clothing I like in the UK... so I've decided to import them myself and sell them online! My online store is called Yuko and it stocks clothes from such designers as Lucky Wang, Shampoodle, Sckoon and Redfish Kids. If you'd like to check out my site, you can find it here:  www.shopyuko.com Please let me know what you think! Heleen

Not 'Just a mum'!

What is stopping you starting your own business right now? If you’d love to earn money in a flexible way, help boost the family budget and show friends and family that you can succeed, read this article from Antonia Chitty and Erica Douglas of www.becomeamumpreneur.com . As mums, we often sell ourselves short. The very phrase, “I’m just a mum” is often heard as we look at great opportunities and decide that they are out of your reach. In fact, as mums we are multi-able, multi-tasking superwomen. We juggle managing a team, even if its members are mainly under 18, scheduling appointments, staying on top of the finances, planning and putting ideas into practice. All these skills put you in a great place...

Ten Top Books for Working Mums

Balancing your career or business with other areas of your life is challenging at the best of times, but throw children into the equation and you're looking at what can frequently seem like an overwhelming task! The thing to remember is that you're not alone as a working parent-and it's getting increasingly easier to keep this in mind as the amount of parenting books on the market continues to grow. Books for working parents, come in many a different form, but the best ones will offer amusing and informative tales of personal experience; support in facing challenges head on; advice and tips on the daily juggle and more long-term issues; inspiration for excelling both in your career and as a parent; or all of the above. Here a...

AARGH - My Childcare Conundrum All Over Again

A little under a year ago I blogged about choosing childcare for Lara who was going to be 7 months old when I returned to work. It was a long and stressful process that required a lot of thought. One year on, I have to start the whole process all over again. I've moved house and in the new year I will be upping my hours so I need to find childcare in my local area – the sooner the better. I can't believe I have to start from scratch on the search for suitable childcare. Last year I started my search with nurseries and was uninspired. I changed my mind and looked for childminders. After contacting over 40 people and interviewing 10, I found two lovely ladies who have served Lara well over the past year. They both offer ver...
